My journey into tech didn’t start with lines of code or Silicon Valley dreams. It began in the realm of education, where I spent five fulfilling years dedicated to nurturing young minds. During this time, I was driven by a desire to empower the next generation, particularly young girls, to explore their potential in the world of technology. Little did I know that this commitment would serve as the foundation for my tech odyssey.
A Pivotal Moment: Sparking the Tech Flame
While mentoring young girls in tech-related activities, I experienced a pivotal moment. Witnessing their curiosity and enthusiasm for technology reignited my long-standing interest in the field. I realized that there was a profound need to bridge the gap between underrepresented communities and the tech industry. This awakening prompted me to take the leap into a new adventure.
The Transition: Education to Technology
Transitioning from the world of education to technology was not without challenges, but it was fueled by determination and an unwavering belief in the power of tech to transform lives. I decided to immerse myself in the tech industry, and this journey led me to positions at influential organizations like Enova, Groupon, and Code for America.
Venturing into Venture Capital
One of the most transformative experiences on my tech journey was my participation in a VC Fellowship with Chicago:Blend. This unique opportunity allowed me to explore the intricate world of venture capital. Further enhancing my expertise, I obtained a certification from VC University, a partnership between the University of California, Berkeley – School of Law, the National Venture Capital Association, and Venture Forward. This program deepened my understanding of venture capital, connecting me with industry leaders and emerging voices who shared their invaluable insights.
Championing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Throughout my tech journey, one constant has been my commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. I firmly believe that the tech industry should be a place where everyone’s voice is heard and where opportunities are accessible to all. This passion for equity and inclusion led to my current role as a Sr. Program Manager at Latinas in Tech, where I have the privilege of supporting, mentoring, and empowering Latina women in tech.
Beyond Tech: Advocacy and Balance
My journey into tech has not only been about professional growth but also about giving back to my community. I’ve served on the Cook County Council on Digital Equity, addressing digital disparities, and joined the Board of Directors for Youth Outlook, supporting LGBTQ+ youth and their families across Northern Illinois.
